The snowclad peaks of the Taurus Mountains look over forested slopes and lush green valley’s giving way to a turquoise sea…

HOYRAN village is situated 5km off the main Antalya highway at the village of Davazlar between Kas and Demre. Its rural setting is complimented perfectly by ‘Hoyran Wedre’, accommodation of exquisite taste with authentic stone village houses set amongst the rugged limestone and planted garden areas. Peace and tranquillity are words that spring to mind whilst lazing by the keyhole cistern shaped pool. For the walker and nature lover, Hoyran makes a perfect base to explore the coast and hinterland of central Lycia…

Jump into our dusty Lada Niva, push the cassette down and our theme tune would play ‘We started out down a dirty road’ Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Armed with a cup of coffee, ‘birinci’ cigarette and the bible; George Bean’s ‘Lycian Turkey’ our archaeological guide to finding hidden Lycian treasure, we kick start our day….

We funded our explorations by selling jeep adventures to unsuspecting tourists, unsure what they were letting themselves in for, but with guaranteed adventure…

Top Choice – Hoyran Wedre Country Houses

A destination hotel if ever there was one, this complex of old and new stone  buildings made to look old is a rural oasis 18km west of Demre. Some 500m up in the Taurus Mountains, with views of Kekova and minutes away from an important Lycian acropolis, Hoyran Wedre counts 16 rooms and suites done in traditional fashion (wattle-and-daub plastered walls) and decorated with antiques sourced in İstanbul. We love the pool shaped like a traditional cattle trough and the set meals (TL40) prepared entirely from localy grown produce( though some rooms have kitchens if you prefer to self-cater). It’s 3km south of Davazlar off the D400.

“There could be no better choice for a few days of total immersion in Mediterranean rural life. The village itself looks and feels as if it has not changed since the Lycian times…This is not a place to visit in passing. It takes a few days at least to feel the rhythm of the earth.”

Butik ve Küçük Oteller – Boutique & Small Hotels

“Hoyran Wedre is a cozy, nature-friendly hotel consisting of authentic village houses located in the quiet, tranquil Hoyran Village in the bosom of Taurus Mountains. The horizon here can be seen at a 180-degree angle from Kekova to Cape Gelidonya, with a view high over the Mediterranean that has won the 2011 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence and Travelers’ Choice 2012 awards. The quiet, peaceful life at Hoyran Werde, which starts with roosters crowing and birds singing, is enlivened by herds of sheep and goats taken out to graze every morning and every evening…”

The hotel-actualy a cluster of traditional-style houses- sits 1640 feet up in the Taurus Mountains, with fantastic view of the sea. Antiques decorate the 16 rooms and puplic areas, and superb meals are prepared from products sourced or raised locally such as freshly made yogurt or lamb sautéed with oregano, green chile peppers, and home made olive oil- all from the hotel’s grounds.
